چکیده

NASA is researching advanced technologies for future exploration missions using intelligent swarms of robotic vehicles. One of these missions is the Autonomous Nano Technology Swarm (ANTS) mission that will explore the asteroid belt using 1,000 cooperative autonomous spacecraft. The emergent properties of intelligent swarms make it a potentially powerful concept, but at the same time more difficult to design and implement. In addition, a reliance on intelligence in each of the spacecraft and collective intelligence in teams of spacecraft will be needed to successfully execute maneuvers in and around asteroids. Designing, verifying and validating this collective intelligence will be one of the major challenges of the

Formal Methods for Autonomic and Swarm-based Systems

Swarms of intelligent rovers and spacecraft are being considered for a number of future NASA missions. These missions will provide NASA scientist and explorers greater flexibility and the chance to gather more science than traditional single spacecraft missions. These swarms of spacecraft are intended to operate for large periods of time without contact with the Earth. To do this, they must be ...

Formally Specifying Families of Space Exploration Missions

NASA plans innovative and novel approaches to future (unmanned) space exploration missions. Future missions involve sending spacecraft and robots to harsh environments, where resilience is necessary for the survival of the mission. In addition, distances and communication lead times between the spacecraft and Earth necessitate much of the mission operation being autonomous. We have been conduct...

Some Verification Issues at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA is developing increasingly complex missions to conduct new science and exploration. Missions are increasingly turning to multi-spacecraft to provide multiple simultaneous views of phenomena, and to search more of the solar system in less time. Swarms of intelligent autonomous spacecraft, involving complex behaviors and interactions, are being proposed to accomplish the goals of these new m...

Autonomous and Autonomic Swarms

A watershed in systems engineering is represented by the advent of swarm-based systems that accomplish missions through cooperative action by a (large) group of autonomous individuals each having simple capabilities and no global knowledge of the group’s objective. Such systems, with individuals capable qf surviving in hostile environments, pose unprecedented challenges to system developers. De...
